hey friends,
a quick note to say the full programme for THIS WORLD MAKES US SICK is available to view on the ICA website here.
Join us on 13th April for our screening of Del LaGrace Volcano’s 1997 film Pansexual Public Porn and an interview from Marc Thompson’s series The Undetectables, an advocacy project aiming to document the lives of those living with HIV.
The screening will be accompanied by a short interview with both contributors.

Sick doesn’t just mean those who are ill. Sick means abnormal, perverted, unnatural.
By juxtaposing two vastly different approaches – one of underground desire, another of advocacy and ‘raising awareness’ – we want to show how and to what end discourses about illness are mobilised in the public arena.
Sick doesn’t just mean those who are ill. Sick means spokesperson, role model, advocate.

Some things Vera and Christine have been thinking about this week:
1) Hallucinogenics
The good weather this week brought ample opportunities for experimenting. We enjoyed forgetting the existence of our corporeal form, especially in this panini which has not allowed a moments rest. We are grateful to have felt part of a bigger system, beautiful and ephemeral as a cherry blossom, connected and part of ~ it all ~.
2) Your inner child
See above. Part of the beauty of shrooms is the complete physical and temporal tailspin they can sometimes send you into. Have we been sitting here for 5 minutes or 5 hours? The visceral pull of our childhood wounds was a bit too much to resist this time round. We’ve been reflecting on childhood wounds, self-parenting and trauma.
3) Britney Spears’ debut album
22 years later it’s still one of my favourite pop debuts
4) Great-grandparents
Thinking about family trees, trying to imagine what kind of lives your ancestors lived. Vera read a thesis on 3rd generation holocaust survivors, and this sentence stood out
“Findings indicate that rather than ruminating on the pain of their ancestors, focusing attention on their strength may result in the ability to move past the pathological symptoms.”
5) The importance of annual leave
We need 3-day work weeks. Life is so much sweeter without the drudgery of wage labour hanging over your head. We’ll say it again and again: Fuck work!
6) Pub gardens
self-explanatory
